I do a lot of work in older homes throughout Hickory and the surrounding area — and one thing I've learned is that most homeowners have no idea whether their wiring is actually a problem until something goes wrong. Wiring isn't something you see day to day, so it's easy to just not think about it.
Here are a few signs I look for, and things you can keep an eye on yourself:
1. Two-prong outlets instead of three-prong. If most of your outlets only have two slots (no ground), that's a sign of older wiring that hasn't been updated — and it means your outlets aren't grounded, which is a real safety gap for anything you plug in that expects a ground (most modern electronics and appliances do).
2. Warm outlets or switch plates. An outlet or switch plate that feels warm to the touch, even slightly, isn't normal. That's worth having looked at.
3. Flickering lights that aren't about the bulb. If you've swapped the bulb and it's still flickering — especially if it happens in multiple rooms at once, or specifically when another appliance turns on — that points to a wiring or connection issue, not the fixture itself.
4. A persistent burning smell with no obvious source. This one's not subtle, and it's not something to wait on. If you smell something like burning plastic or a faint electrical smell and can't find where it's coming from, that's worth an urgent call, not a "I'll get to it eventually."
5. Fuses instead of breakers. If your home still has a fuse box rather than a breaker panel, that's a strong sign the electrical system predates a lot of modern safety standards, and it's genuinely worth having evaluated for an upgrade.
None of this is meant to scare anyone — plenty of older homes have wiring that's held up fine for decades. But these are the signs I'd want to know about if it were my own house, and they're worth a second look rather than ignoring.
