Get in the Water Sooner. Wired Safely from Day One.

A new hot tub is only as good as the circuit behind it. Water and electricity leave no room for shortcuts, so the wiring has to be sized right, protected right and placed where code requires. Stickler's Electrical Service hooks up hot tubs and spas for homeowners in Hickory, NC and across the Catawba Valley, on patios, on decks and in new backyard setups.

Before You Buy a Hot Tub: Two Things to Check

1. Can your electrical service handle it?

Hot tubs pull 50 amps or more, depending on the model. That is a big new load, and a lot of people don't think about whether their electrical service can carry it until the tub is already on the way. Give us a call before you make the purchase, and we'll come out for an in-home evaluation of your electrical system. If your panel or service needs an upgrade, you'll know before you buy, not after. See what that involves on our panel upgrade cost page.

2. Where will it sit?

We can put your hot tub anywhere you want it. Just know that the farther it sits from your main panel, the more wire, conduit and trenching it takes, and the price can go up quickly. If you're flexible on placement, a spot closer to the panel can save real money. We'll walk the yard with you and lay out the options.

What a Hot Tub Hookup Involves

  • Panel and service check. We confirm your panel has the room and capacity for a dedicated hot tub circuit. If it doesn't, we'll tell you plainly and go over your options, including a panel upgrade.
  • Dedicated 240-volt circuit. Most hot tubs need their own circuit, typically 50 amps or more, with the breaker and wire sized to your tub's specs.
  • GFCI-protected disconnect. We install the disconnect within sight of the tub and at least 5 feet away, as code requires, so the power can be shut off safely for service.
  • Underground or surface runs. Tub across the yard? We trench and run the wiring underground. On a deck or patio near the house, we run it cleanly along the shortest safe path.
  • Permit and inspection. We pull the permit and handle the inspection, so the job is done to code.
  • Testing. We power up the tub, test the GFCI protection and make sure everything works before we leave.

A Hickory Project: Trenching from the Main Panel to the Hot Tub

One of our Hickory hot tub hookups was a real task. The tub sat out in the homeowners' new backyard, so we trenched all the way from the main panel to the hot tub and ran the circuit underground. It's a good example of why location matters: the trench was the biggest part of the job. Here's what the customer had to say:

"We had a great, easy experience with the Stickler team hooking up our hot tub in our new backyard. Our job was somewhat complicated due to the need to make a trench for the electrical wiring to the tub, but they made it happen! After first contacting Stickler, we promptly had a consultation and were provided a same-day quote for the job. After paying, the install was completed within a few days. The team was knowledgeable and friendly. The price we were quoted was fair (and in line with other quotes we received). Highly recommend!"

Plug-and-Play Spas

Some smaller spas run on a standard 120-volt plug. Those still need a dedicated GFCI-protected outlet in the right spot, not an extension cord. We can install that too.

Common Questions

When should I call you? Before you buy, if you can. We'll check your electrical service and help you pick a location, so the wiring can be ready and the tub can be filled and running soon after it arrives.

Will I get a price before the work starts? Yes. Once we've seen your panel and where the tub will sit, you get the price up front.

Do I need a panel upgrade? Not always. It depends on how much capacity your panel and service have left, which is exactly what the in-home evaluation tells you. More answers are on our FAQ page.
